If you look up the TPO that we use frequently in the dictionary, here's what we do.

Since the early 1960s, it has been strongly argued that the above three basic principles should be used for dressing, with the initials of time, place, and occasion. You should dress formally when attending a ceremony and actively when attending an athletic competition. It is the most important rule in wearing clothes that even the best clothes will lose their effectiveness if they don't fit the TPO 

​

What is the most important thing for all three things? Someone said it is timing. It is of no use to report missing the right time, no matter how important it may be when payment is made. And it is sometimes necessary to be meticulous in the morning or afternoon and even in the mood of a minor signatory.

Lincoln's witty answer.

​

When Lincoln, then a young lawyer, ran for Congress, his opponent accused him of being a man of little faith and spoke to the audience.

​

"If you want to go to heaven, raise your hands."

​

Everyone raised their hands high, but Lincoln did not. 

And the candidate, then, 

​

"You mean, Lincoln, you didn't raise your hand, and you want to go to hell?"

​

Then Lincoln smiled and said,

​

"You're welcome. I don't want to go to heaven or hell now. I want to go to the National Assembly!"

​

The audience burst into laughter at the long-awaited answer.

And Lincoln also said.

​

"My opponent lives in a luxurious house with a lightning rod. But I don't think I've sinned enough to be afraid of lightning."

우리가 자주쓰는 TPO를 사전에서 찾아보면 다음과 같다.
​
때(time), 장소(place), 경우(occasion)의 머리글자를 딴 것으로 1960년대 초부터 옷을 입는 데 위의 세 가지를 기본적인 원칙으로 하여야 한다는 주장이 강하게 대두되었다. 예식에 참석할 때에는 정장을, 운동 경기에 참석할 때에는 거기에 적합한 활동적인 옷차림을 해야 된다. 아무리 훌륭한 옷이라도 TPO에 맞지 않으면 옷의 효과를 상실하게 된다는 옷 착용시의 가장 중요한 규칙이다.

세가지 모두 중요한 데 무엇이 가장 중요할까? 혹자는 타이밍이라고 한다. 결제를 들어간다고 할때 아무리 중요한 내용이라도 시기를 놓친 보고는 아무런 소용이 없다. 그리고 결재를 하더라도 오전이냐 오후냐 그리고 사소한 결재자의 그날 기분까지도 챙기는 꼼꼼함도 때론 필요하다.

​
당시 젊은 변호사로 있던 링컨이 하원의원으로 출마했을 때, 상대 후보는 링컨이 신앙심이 별로 없는 사람이라고 비난하고 청중을 향해 말했다.

모두 높이 손을 들었으나 링컨만은 손을 들지 않았다.

그러자 링컨은 빙긋이 웃으며 말했다.

“천만에요. 나는 지금 천당도, 지옥도 가고 싶지 않소. 나는 국회로 가고 싶소!”

마치 기다리기라도 했던 대답에 청중은 폭소를 자아냈다.

그리고 또 링컨은 말했다.
​
“나의 상대 후보는 피뢰침까지 달린 호화저택에 살고 있습니다. 그러나 나는 벼락을 무서워할 정도로 죄를 많이 짓지는 않았다고 생각합니다”
