◇ Year of the Rat in 2020

In the East, 2020 is called the Year of the Rat. It represents and symbolizes animals every 12 years, and next year comes the Year of the Rat. In particular, the white mouse symbolizes the bright and big, and also means that it will come back again, meaning "recovery."

Rats are meant to breed wealth and Since ancient times, mice have been animals that mean abundance, diligence, and cleverness. White rats can be identified by their good interpersonal relationships, bright personality, outstanding understanding, agile behavior, and quick handling, as symbolized by diligent savings.

A long time ago, someone (scientist) dropped a big shooting star on Earth, and after that, the age of dinosaurs ended and mammals began. But the mammal started out as a mouse. The first animal to survive in caves or mountains in those cold, dark dark dark days... You must have healed a lot to keep your offspring alive.

We fear and hate mice, but if we think of them as a backwater, they will be struggling to make ends meet. I was living first, but I wonder if we human beings invaded? I think about the world we live together for a while.

◇ Barkenhead spirit

Alexander Seton (1814-1852) was the captain of one of the first iron wires in British naval history. 

The Barkenhead, which was sailing from Britain with 472 troops and 162 family members to fight against the Kosa tribe in South Africa, will be in danger of being stranded on a rock near the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa early February 26, 1852.

The lifeboats had three boats and only 60 people in the garden. Only 180 of them could be rescued.  

At this time, Colonel Seton does not hesitate to issue an order. The soldiers, "Save the Woman and the Child First," lined the deck with a floating posture until the lifeboats carrying the family went far. Very few soldiers managed to survive the sinking of the ship by relying on cardboard and back. 

Captain Seton conceded even the lifeline to the new soldiers. This spirit of sacrifice has become a British social norm and soon becomes a work ethic. 

It was the reason why Britain became a country of gentlman, and the first disaster relief principle to save women and children was created.

According to the case of the Titanic sinking, 74 percent of 2,200 passengers were women and 20 percent were men. The captain said Edward John Smith, who was about to retire, had not left the steering room after ordering the crew to rescue the children and women first.

◇ 2020년 쥐의 해

​

동양에서는 2020년을 쥐의 해라고 한다. 12년 마다 동물을 대표하며 상징하는데 내년에는 쥐의 해가 온 것이다. 특히 흰쥐는 밝고 큰 것을 상징하고, 다시 돌아온다는 의미도 있어 "회복"의 뜻을 의미한다.

​쥐는 부와 자식을 많이 낳는다는 뜻을 갖고 있다. 옛날부터 쥐는 풍요와 부지런함, 그리고 영리함을 의미하는 동물이다. 흰 쥐는 쥐가 좋은 대인관계, 밝은 성격, 뛰어난 이해력, 민첩한 행동, 부지런한 저축으로 상징되듯 타인과의 관계, 빠른 대처 능력으로 파악할 수 있다.

아주오래 옛날 누군가(과학자) 지구에 큰 별똥이 떨어져 그 이후 공룡의 시대가 끝나고 포유류가 시작됐다고 한다. 그런데 그 포유류의시작이 쥐라고 한다. 그 춥고 어두운 암흑의 척박한 시대에 동굴이나 산위에서 살아나 생명력을 이어나간 최초의 동물... 자손을 이어가기 위해 새끼도 많이 나았으리라 짐작된다.

우리가 쥐를 무서워하고 혐오하지만 역지사지로 생각해 보면 쥐도 나름 먹고 살려고 바둥치는 것일 것이다. 먼저 살고 있었는데 우리 인간이 침해한 건 아닐까? 함께 사는 세상을 잠시나마 생각해 본다.

◇ 버큰헤드 정신

알렉산더 세튼대령(1814~1852)은 영국 해군사상 최초의 철선 가운데 하나인 ‘버큰헤드호’의 함장이었다. 

남아프리카 코사 부족과의 전쟁에 참여할 병력 472명과 가족 162명을 싣고 영국을 출발해 항해하던 버큰헤드호는 1852년 2월 26일 새벽 아프리카 남단 희망봉 근처에서 암초에 좌초될 위기를 맞게 된다.

구명보트는 달랑 3정, 정원은 불과 60명. 고작 180명만 구조가 가능한 상황이었다.  

이때 세튼대령이 주저 않고 명령을 내린다. “여자와 어린아이를 먼저 구조하라” 병사들은 가족을 실은 구명보트가 멀어질 때까지 갑판에서 모두 배가 침몰할 때까지 부동자세로 도열했다. 함정이 침몰한 후 간신히 널판지 등에 의지해 살아난 병사들은 극소수였다. 

세튼대령은 그 생명줄마저도 신참 병사들에게 양보했다. 이런 희생 정신이 영국의 사회규범이 되었고 곧 직업윤리로까지 자리잡게 된다. 

영국이 젠틀맨의 나라가 된 이유이자, 여성과 아이들을 가장 먼저 구하는 재난 구조원칙이 만들어진 계기가 된 사건이었다.

타이타닉호 침몰 사례도 보면 승객 2200명 가운데 여성 구조율 74%, 남성 구조율은 20%였다. 당시 선장은 은퇴를 앞둔 에드워드 존 스미스, 그는 어린이와 여성을 먼저 구출할 것을 승무원들에게 명령한 후 조타실을 벗어나지 않았다고 한다.
