Secretary of State Seward and Lincoln

◇ Secretary of State Seward and Lincoln

Alaska has a port city called "Suward," and there is also a Sueward Highway.

Alaska was purchased by the U.S. government in 1867 for $7.2 million from Russia. (145 years ago, the dollar was too much for the U.S. government to bear.)

It was Secretary of State William Seward who led the purchase of Alaska at that time.

But Congress and the media have mocked Alaska as a "Suward's icebox" for paying such a large sum of money to buy a desolate, cold Alaska at a time when the vast western development of the U.S. mainland has yet to take place.

The Alaska people thought that without the leadership of the 'Suward' minister at the time, Alaska would remain Russian land and thousands of nuclear missiles would be deployed toward the United States.

"Suward" and "Lincoln" were rivals who fought fiercely in the Republican presidential nomination race. "Suward" was actually a politician with a much more colorful career than "Lincoln." At the age of the terms and conditions, he was elected twice to the governor of New York and to the Senate, and was so aggressive in protecting black people's rights that he was radical in his young years as a lawyer.

Given the situation at the time, "Lincoln" from the Midwest’s periphery has posed a challenge to "Suward," who was ahead in the map, by all accounts.

But contrary to expectations, "Suward" suffered a come-from-behind defeat by Lincoln. The defeated "Suward" traveled around the U.S. to support his rival Lincoln. Lincoln, who was elected president, appointed Suward as Secretary of State.

What makes "Lincoln" great for Americans is that it unified the two broken countries, and what makes "Suward" great is that it broadened the country's outward appearance, looking ahead to the future of the United States at a time of turmoil.
