Australian rabbit
◇ Australian rabbit
Originally there were no rabbits in Australia, but in 1859, Thomas Austin, a British native, asked his cousin to send him 24 wild rabbits for hunting purposes. But some rabbits fled to the wild.
Female rabbits have two uteruses.
You can have another pregnancy while you are pregnant, and you can have many babies at once. Also, natural predators such as foxes, wolves and eagles did not exist or have many, and were not so cold in winter that they were able to reproduce all year round.
This stretch of rabbit began to devour all the grass in Australia. They even broke into the ranch and swept away the livestock's food.
As the number of rabbits increased and the damage continued, in 1901, Australia set up a hedge of more than 3,000 kilometers, or the Great Rabbit, on three occasions. But over time, the rabbit population has increased and the fence has gotten old. In 1920, the fence eventually broke through and Australia began to fear rabbits again.
Then there was the Great Depression in 1929. More people lost their jobs and more people starved to death because they couldn't buy food because they couldn't make money. But it was fortunate that Australia had an enormous number of rabbits.
But even after the Great Depression and the war, the rabbit still did not shrink. This time, the government will bring in foxes, the natural enemy of rabbits. At first, it felt like the rabbit population was shrinking because of the fox. But this time for a while, foxes were a problem too.
Now the fox population is increasing. This has caused damage to other animals and livestock.
With rabbit problems still unresolved, Australia decided in 1950 to spread myxoma virus. (from about 600 million to about 100 million.)
