King Sejong

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.

◇ 與民可矣

In 1430 (the Chosun Dynasty era, the 12th year of King Sejong’s reign), an observer in Gyeongsang Province suggested that the tax be levied in a lump sum because it is difficult to tell the difference between the two countries to implement the policy of exempting reclaimed fields.

In response, Sejong said, "Why can't you tell the difference? If you're in doubt, you can do it with the people," he said. It is the spirit of a woman to be with the people.

This attitude of King Sejong also leads to the spirit of ‘不可不盡’. This means that invincible spirit must be fulfilled.

On January 22, 1437 (the 19th year of King Sejong’s reign), Sejong speaks of his philosophy about a bad year. Sejong often slanders at each other for bad years, saying that even if the sky is in such bad years, one cannot help doing all one can do.

This is why he told Cho An-hyo, a Kimpo prefect, one day, "I don't know about the changes in the sky, but I can't help but do what people have to do."

難事爲之[Nanshaweji] is linked to the inexhaustible because it means to go to work with all your heart and soul.
