◇ Carnegie and the name of a person

On the tombstone of American steel king Carnegie, the following words are inscribed.

"Here lies a man who brings together better men than himself.’

When Carnegie was five years old, he raised a few rabbits, which he couldn't keep on his own as they kept breeding and growing more and more. After much consideration, I decided to ask my friends. 

John, Henry, and Donald each have five friends, and they have decided to call the rabbits Henri Rabbit, John Rabbit and Donald Rabbit after their respective names. 

Then, their friends raised rabbits and increased the number of Marie as if they were competing against each other. Carnegie was young but then realized the importance of his name. 

Carnegie did not name the new company every time his business flourished day and merged several companies, but named it the original president. That is the key to his becoming a steel king.

Thus, a famous saying was made: ‘Man's name is the handle of a kettle.’

'A man's name is like a handle on a kettle. You must hold the handle to move the kettle.'

'To move a person, you must call him by his name.’

◇ 카네기와 사람 이름

미국의 철강왕 카네기의 묘비에는 다음과 같은 말이 새겨져 있다.

‘여기에 자기보다 훌륭한 사람들을 모아들인 남자가 잠자고 있노라.’

카네기가 다섯살 때 몇 마리의 토끼를 길렀는데 그것이 자꾸 번식해서 마리 수가 많아지자 혼자서는 도저히 키울 수가 없었다. 여러 가지로 궁리한 끝에 친구들에게 부탁하기로 했다. 

존, 헨리, 도널드 이렇게 세사람의 친구에게 각각 다섯 마리씩 맡기고 토끼들에게는 맡은 사람의 이름을 붙여 ‘헨리 토끼’ ‘존 토끼’‘도널드 토끼’라고 부르기로 했다. 

그러자 친구들은 열심히 토끼를 키워 서로 경쟁하다시피 마리 수를 늘여 가는 것이었다. 카네기는 어렸지만 그 때 이미 이름에 대한 중요성을 깨달았다. 

카네기는 사업이 날로 번창하여 여러 회사들을 합병할 때마다 새로운 회사의 이름을 카네기로 하지 않고 원래 사장의 이름으로 했다. 그것이 그로 하여금 철강왕이 되게 한 비결이다.

그리하여 ‘사람의 이름은 주전자의 손잡이’라는 명언이 만들어졌다.

'사람의 이름은 주전자의 손잡이와 같다. 주전자를 옮기려면 그 손잡이를 잡지 않으면 안된다.'

'사람을 움직이려면 그 이름을 부르지 않으면 안 된다.’
