◇ π Day

Mathematicians made the day to celebrate the circumference of pi on March 14, reflecting the approximate value of 3.14.

"π" is the first term used by Swiss mathematician Euler in the 18th century and is the initial letter of the Greek word "περι" meaning circumference.

Since the original rate starts at 3.141592, they gather at 1:59 p.m. on March 14 to eat pie, which is homonym for pie. 

◇ Cut the Pai

The two brothers were fighting, saying they would cut each other first with a knife to eat a bigger pie. The moment my brother tried to cut his share with a knife, my father saw it.

 

"Wait! Listen to your father. It's okay for anyone to cut it, but if one person cuts it, the other person picks it up first."

 

When he heard this, his brother cut the pie in half exactly.

◇ 파이 데이

수학자들이 원주율 π(파이)를 기념하기 위해 만든 날로 π의 근사값인 3.14를 반영해 3월 14일을 기념일로 정했다.

‘파이(π)’는 18세기 스위스 수학자 오일러가 처음 사용한 용어로 둘레를 뜻하는 그리스어 'περιμετροζ'의 머리글자이다.

원주율의 값이 3.141592로 시작하기 때문에 3월 14일 1시 59분에 모여 파이(π)와 동음어인 파이를 먹는다. 

◇ 파이 자르기

두 형제가 더 큰 파이를 먹기 위해 칼을 들고 서로 먼저 자르겠다며 싸우고 있었다. 형이 칼로 자기몫을 자르려고 하는 순간 아버지가 그 모습을 보았다.

 

"잠깐! 아버지 말을 들어봐라. 누가 잘라도 괜찮지만 한 사람이 자르면 나머지 사람이 먼저 집는것으로 하자."

 

이 말을 들은 형은 파이를 정확하게 반으로 잘랐다. 

◇ 아심여칭 (我心如秤)

'내 마음은 저울과 같다'라는 뜻으로, 저울처럼 어느 한쪽으로 치우침이 없이 공평무사(公平無私)한 것을 비유한 말로 제갈량의 고사에서 유래.

제갈량은 뛰어난 지략가로도 유명하지만, 역사적으로 상벌을 공정하게 시행한 것으로도 높이 평가받는다. 

제갈량은 스스로 "내 마음은 저울과 같아서 사람들의 옳고 그름이나 공과(功過)에 대하여 가볍지도 무겁지도 않도록 공정하게 처리한다(我心如秤, 不能爲人作輕重)"라고 말하였다.

* 인생이란 결코 공평하지 않다. 이 사실에 익숙해져라.
