An old Jewish man was waiting for surgery on the operating table. However, he believes that his son, who is a famous surgeon, should lead the family. 

Just before he goes under anesthesia, the old man has something to say to his son.

"Your father, what's going on?"

◇ Gray rhino

마취에 들어가기 직전 노인은 아들에게 할 말이 있단다.

◇ 회색 코뿔소(grey rhino)

2013년 1월 다보스포럼에서 세계정책연구소 소장이던 미셸 부커가 처음 발표한 개념으로, 코뿔소는 몸집이 커 멀리서도 눈에 잘 띄며 진동만으로도 움직임을 느낄 수 있지만 코뿔소가 달려오면 두려움 때문에 아무것도 하지 못하는 상황에 비유한 말이다.

의사 결정자들이 위기 앞에서 결단을 내리기보다 미적거리며 회색 코뿔소를 방치하는 이유로 미흡한 시스템, 자원 부족, 리더십 부족, 우선순위를 설정하는 어려움, 책임성 결여 등 다양한 원인을 제시했다.

회색 코뿔소가 돌진해 오는 것을 알았을 때 가장 좋은 방법은 코뿔소가 현재 존재한다는 것은 인식하고 여러 단계를 거쳐 가면서 막아 내도록 노력해야 한다.

블랙스완(검은 백조)이 예상할 수 없었던 위험 요인이라면 회색 코뿔소는 예상하면서도 대처하지 못하는 위험 요인이란 차이가 있다.
