허리를 심하게 구부리고 항상 지팡이를 짚고 다니는 한 할머니가 아들과 함께 병원을 찾았다.

그런데 진료실에 들어간 지 단 몇 분 만에 할머니는 지팡이를 짚고 허리를 쭉 편 채로 나오는 것이 아닌가!

◇ 경(敬)

敬(경)은 한층 더 게을리 하지 않음을 뜻하고, ‘공경(恭敬), 감사(感謝)하는 예(禮), 삼가다(몸가짐이나 언행을 조심하다), 마음을 절제하다’ 등의 의미를 지닌 글자이다.

공경(恭敬)하여 섬기는 것을 경사(敬事)라 하고, 삼가 조상(弔喪)하는 것을 경조(敬弔)라 한다. 공경(恭敬)의 뜻을 나타내는 인사를 경례(敬禮)라 한다. 공경하는 마음과 존경(尊敬)하는 뜻을 경의(敬意)라 하고, 공경하고 사랑함을 경애(敬愛)라 한다.

초월적(超越的)이거나 위대한 대상 앞에서 우러르고 받드는 마음으로 삼가고 조심하는 상태를 경건(敬虔)이라 하고 노인을 공경함을 경로(敬老)라 한다. 공경하고 위로하는 모임을 경로회(敬老會)라 하며 집을 경로당이라 한다.

남의 말을 공경하는 태도로 듣는 것을 경청(敬聽)이라 하고, 공경하여 축하함을 경하(敬賀)라고 한다. 고사성어로는 하늘을 공경하고 사람을 사랑한다는 경천애인(敬天愛人)이 있다.
