◇ Germany’s Great Moon Ho Goethe ran into a critic who harshly criticized his work while walking in a park.

The critic stood in front of Goethe and shouted loudly.

"I've never given way to an idiot!"

Goethe said.

"It's the opposite of me."

Goethe smiled and gave up his seat on the side street. Goethe avoided a situation in which a quarrel of words could have occurred with humor. The grandson said, "When we seek profit, we will not worry unnecessarily only if we keep in mind the side of the loss, and when we have lost, we have to keep in mind the side of the profit we get from the loss."

The "wise man" does not make a wrong judgment because it simultaneously counts the interests of advantage and disadvantage.

◇ 독일의 대문호 괴테가 공원에서 산책을 하다가 자기 작품을 신랄하게 비판한 비평가와 마주쳤다.

비평가는 괴테 앞에 서더니 큰 소리로 외쳤다

"나는 이제껏 단 한 번도 바보에게 길을 양보한 적이 없소!"

괴테가 말했다.

"나와 반대군요.”

괴테는 미소를 지으며 옆길로 자리를 양보해주었다. 괴테는 유머로 말 다툼이 일어날 뻔한 상황을 피한 것이다. 이처럼 겸손과 유머는 난감한 상황을 밝게 해주고 분위기를 전환시킬 뿐 아니라 넓은 마음과 도량을 보여주는 중요한 덕목이다.

◇ 지자지려 필잡어이해
     智者之慮必雜於利害

지혜로운 자의 생각에는 반드시 이로움과 해로움이 섞여 있다.

손자는 "이익을 추구할 때는 반드시 손실의 면도 염두에 두어야만 일이 순조롭게 풀려나가고, 반대로 손실을 입었을 때는 손실에 의해 얻는 이익의 면도 염두에 두어야만 쓸데없는 걱정을 하지 않을 것"라고 했다.

'지혜로운 자'는 유리함과 불리함의 이해관계를 동시에 따지기 때문에 잘못된 판단을 하지 않는다는 것이다.
