◇ Importance of geography

◇ 지리의 중요성

지리는 통치자의 학문이다. 그래서 군대에서 독도법은 장교급 이상의 지휘관만 배운다. 과거 적에게 아측 지도를 넘기는 건 반역행위였다.
 
기원전 3세기 소국 마케도니아의 왕자로 태어나 그리스, 페르시아, 인도에 걸친 대제국을 건설한 알렉산더 대왕은 어릴 때부터 지리학자의 특별과외를 받았다. 지리적 상상력이 풍부한 지도자가 택한 동방원정 루트는 전략적 요충지를 하나씩 점령해가면서 자연스럽게 전력을 보강할 수 있도록 치밀하게 계획된 코스였다.

그는 병사들이 먹고 쉬면서 재충전하기 좋은 곳, 무기를 약탈해 전력을 보충할 수 있는 곳을 미리 지도에 찍어놓고 하나씩 정복해 나가며 ‘알렉산드리아’라고 명명하는 효율적 공간 전략을 구사했다.
 
유럽 변방의 초라한 섬나라에 불과했던 영국의 운명을 극적으로 바꾼 엘리자베스 1세 여왕의 초상화를 보면 배경으로 화려한 지도와 지구본이 빠지지 않고 등장한다. 그녀는 해적 드레이크와의 은밀한 거래를 통해 동방으로 가는 무역 항로의 지배권을 스페인으로부터 빼앗아 대영제국의 기초를 닦은 선구자였다.
 
여왕 어머니는 어린 아들에게 침대 머리맡에서 달콤한 자장가 대신 지리적 상상력을 자극하는 ‘세계지리 동화책’을 들려주었다.

이튼·킹스·해로와 같은 영국을 이끌 지도자를 길러내는 사립학교에서 지리는 중요 과목으로 분류되었다. 영국의 세계 진출 전략은 ‘대영제국의 심장’으로 불리던 왕립지리학회 소속 지리학자들을 중심으로 수립되었다.
