◇ Pope and Traffic Police

While visiting Europe, the Pope suddenly wanted to drive while touring the city.

"Hey, I've never driven before. Can you give me a chance to drive?"

At the request of the Pope, the driver would have to take the wheel.

I left it to the Pope and sat in the back seat.

However, the pope, who is new to driving, was caught by the police for speeding.

A police officer who opened a window and saw the pope contacted the headquarters with a perplexed face.

"Captain, what am I supposed to do about this?"

Then the chief asked.

"Are you the governor again?"

"No, it's more important."

"What! The Prime Minister?"

shouted the frustrated chief.

"Who the hell is that then?"

Then what the police officer says,

"Captain, he's the driver of the Pope."

◇ Admiral Nelson

Nelson lost his right eye to the sand and stones that French revolutionary forces fired cannons at while directing a landing operation targeting the Corsica Calvi region in 1794.

It also lost its right arm in an operation to seize Canary Island. A year later in 1798, he recovered from his injury and returned.

On October 21, 1805, the French and Spanish fleets launched a fierce naval battle in Cape Trafalgar, Spain. The naval battle went exactly as Nelson planned. The British fleet penetrated between the enemy's 13th and 14th ships and invaded or seized 19 enemy ships. The British army has lost only one ship.

Nelson, however, was fatally shot by a musket shot by a French sniper in the sea.

Admiral Nelson said, "I'm satisfied now. I thank God for allowing me to complete my mission for my country," he died after leaving his last words. Nelson's body was preserved in a brandy container and moved to London before being buried at St. Paul's Cathedral cemetery.

Although Nelson died early at the age of 47, he left Britain with the world's strongest navy as a legacy.

◇ 교황과 교통경찰

유럽을 방문중인 교황은 시내를 관광하다가 갑자기 운전을 해보고 싶어졌다

"여보게 내가 운전을 해본 적이 없어서 그러는데 한번만 운전좀 하게 해주겠나?"

교황의 부탁으로 운전기사는 운전대를
교황에게 맡기고 뒷자리에 앉았다.

그런데 운전을 처음해보는 교황이 속도 위반으로 결국 경찰에게 걸렸다.

창문을 열고 교황을 본 경찰관이 난감한 얼굴로 본부로 연락했다.

"서장님, 이 일을 어찌해야 할지"

그러자 서장이 물었다.
"혹시 또 주지사야?"

"아닙니다 더 중요한 인사입니다"

"뭐야! 혹시 총리?"

답답한 서장이 소리쳤다.

"그럼 도대체 누구야?"

그러자 경찰관이 하는 말

"서장님, 교황을 운전기사로 둔 사람입니다."


◇ 넬슨 제독

넬슨은 1794년 코르시카 칼비 지역을 겨냥한 상륙작전을 지휘하다 프랑스 혁명군이 대포를 쏘아 떨어뜨린 모래와 돌에 오른쪽 눈을 잃었다.

또한 캐너리 섬을 점령하려는 작전에서 오른쪽 팔마저 잃었다. 1년 후인 1798년 그는 부상에서 회복해 다시 복귀했다.

1805년 10월 21일, 프랑스 스페인 함대는 스페인 트라팔가르 곶에서 치열한 해전에 돌입했다. 이 해전은 정확히 넬슨의 작전계획대로 진행됐다. 영국 함대는 적 열세 번째와 열네 번째 함선 사이를 뚫고 들어가 19척의 적함을 격침 또는 나포했다. 영국군은 단 한 척의 함정을 잃었을 뿐이다.

그러나 넬슨은 이 해전에서 프랑스 저격수가 쏜 머스킷 총에 맞아 치명상을 입었다.

넬슨 제독은 “나는 이제 만족해. 조국을 위해 내 임무를 완수하게 해준 하느님께 감사한다”라고 마지막 말을 남긴 뒤 숨을 거뒀다. 넬슨의 시신은 브랜디 통에 보존돼 런던으로 옮긴 뒤 세인트 폴 성당 묘지에 안장됐다.

넬슨은 비록 47세를 일기로 일찍 세상을 떠났지만 조국 영국에 세계 최강 해군을 유산으로 남겼다.
