To preserve healthy teeth for a long time, you must observe the following three rules:

1. Be sure to brush your teeth after meals.

2. Visit the dentist twice a year.

3. Keep your nose out of other people's business.

◇ Nightingale

Nightingale was known to us as the "white angel." But the image of "nightingale" in Europe or the West is a little different from what we think. Nightingale can be understood as a person who planned policies at the Ministry of Health and Welfare in this era, and who had been at the forefront.

Nightingale, who was treating soldiers on the battlefield, found that more people died from poor hygiene in hospitals than from injuries on the battlefield. So to improve this, he wanted to actively inform members of Congress using writings and tables to get the budget. 

But it was not enough to persuade members of Congress with only writings and votes during the war, and support was not easy.

So Nightingale expressed in a rose-shaped chart that it could reduce the mortality rate of 42 percent by 2 percent by improving hygiene, and condensed 800 complex reports into simple visual data. This is the Rose Diagram.

This graph, one of the best statistical graphics of the 19th century, has become an apotheosis of data journalism.

건강한 치아를 오래 보존하려면 다음 3가지 규칙을 잘 지켜야 한다.

1. 식후엔 반드시 양치질을 할 것.

2. 1년에 두 번은 치과의사를 찾아갈 것.

3. 남의 일에 쓸데없이 참견하지 말 것.

◇ 나이팅게일

우리에게 나이팅게일은 ‘백의의 천사’로 알려졌다. 그러나 유럽이나 서양에서 '나이팅게일'의 이미지는 우리가 생각하는 것과는 조금 다르다. 나이팅게일은 요즘 시대로치면 보건복지부에서 정책을 계획하고, 한편으로 일선을 누볐던 사람으로 이해할 수 있다.

전장에서 병사들을 치료하던 나이팅게일은 전장에서의 부상으로 인한 사망자 보다 병원의 열악한 위생환경으로 인해 사망하는 사람들이 더 많다는 것을 알게되었다. 그래서 이를 개선하기 위해 예산을 얻기 위해 글과 표를 이용해 의회 의원들에게 적극 알리고자 했다. 

그러나 전시 중에 글과 표만으로 의회 의원들을 설득하기에는 역부족이었고, 지원은 쉽게 이루어지지 않았다.

그래서 나이팅게일은 위생을 개선하여 42%의 사망률을 2%까지 줄일 수 있다는 점을 장미 모양의 도표로 표현하였고, 800장의 복잡한 보고서를 단순한 시각자료로 축약했다. 이것이 바로 로즈다이어그램 (나이팅게일 차트)이다.

19세기 최고의 통계그래픽으로 손꼽히는 이 그래프는 데이터 저널리즘의 효시가 되었다.
