A man who got a flu shot at a hospital complained angrily.

"It's too much, isn't it, 30 dollars for a shot in the world?

Then the nurse smiled and said,

◇ Unintentional consequences

In 1958, Mao Zedong saw and ordered the sparrow pecking at grain.

"That bird is a harmful bird."

But this one word brought a terrible disaster.

As soon as the order of China's most powerful man was dropped, a massive sparrow sweep began across the continent. Adults as well as children were busy shooting sparrows and killing them. As a result, about 210 million sparrows disappeared during the year.

However, it is a disaster in rural areas. While the natural enemy sparrows were missing, pests bred in large numbers and ate their crops. The amount of grains that sparrows eat has greatly decreased, but the crops are damaged by the flood of pests, resulting in a huge crop failure.

The number of Chinese who died of hunger that year was as many as 40 million, in short, bringing about the greatest disaster on earth in the 20th century.

◇ 독감 예방주사

병원에서 독감 예방주사를 맞은 한 남자가 화를 내며 불평했다.

“세상에 주사 한 방 놓고 3만원이라니, 너무하는 거 아닙니까?”

그러자 간호사가 웃으면서 말했다.

가까운 벗이나 반가운 손님이 찾아온다는 소식을 듣고 기쁜 나머지 신마저 거꾸로 신고 나가 마중한다는 뜻으로, 손님을 반갑게 맞이하는 것을 비유하는 말.

◇ 의도하지 않은 결과
(unintended consequences)

1958년 마오쩌둥은 곡식을 쪼아먹는 참새를 보고 지시한다.

"저 새는 해로운 새다"

그러나 이 말 한마디는 무서운 재앙을 불러왔다.

중국 최고 권력자의 지시가 떨어지자마자 대륙 전역에서 대대적인 참새 소탕작전이 시작됐다. 어른은 물론 아이까지 새총을 들고 다니며 참새를 쏘아 죽이는 일에 열중했다. 그 결과 1년 동안 참새 약 2억 1000만 마리가 사라졌다.

그런데 그 일로 농촌에서는 재앙이 발생한다. 천적 참새가 없어진 틈을 타 해충이 대량으로 번식해 곡식을 갈아먹은 것이다. 참새들이 주워먹는 알곡의 양은 크게 줄었지만, 해충의 범람으로 농작물이 피해를 입어 엄청난 흉작을 맞게 된다.

그 해에 굶어 죽은 중국인의 수는 무려 4천만 명, 한마디로 20세기에 지구상의 가장 큰 재앙을 불러 왔다.
