Land mine detection system

The U.S. Army was trying to cancel the mine detection system, which had been developed for nine years at about $40 million, because the actual test of the prototype had too low a mine detection rate. (The test failed to detect 96% of low-metal-to-manage mines)

Stazowski, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, visited the so-called Outlier Floyd Rocky Rocky Rockwell (a man who is far above average) on mine detection.

Professor Stajowski drew out his expertise using the "effective extraction of professionalism" methods developed over decades.

Floyd did not use equipment as he wrote. He was not simply responding to sound (in fact, he was quite hearing-dead compared to other mine detectors), he was catching patterns, proceeding at a slower speed (1/3) than the speed suggested in the manual, using a detector at a lower height (even with almost contact to the ground) than the height (more than 2 inches) written in the manual, and constantly adjusting the detector's sensitivity switch.

Professor Stajowski taught other soldiers five days of this secret that Floyd himself did not even recognize, and experimented with measuring the effect. The detection rate, which reached 10% before training, exceeded 90% after training.

쿠웨이트의 어느 여기자가 이라크전쟁의 종군기자로 활동하게 되었다.

그렇지만 남성우월주의가 팽배한 곳이기 때문에 여기자는 무조건 남자의 뒤를 따라다녀야만 했다.

어느 날 여기자가 전쟁터 현장으로 급파되었는데 이상하게 이번에는 반대로 남자들이 여기자의 뒤를 따라다니는 것이었다.

이 광경을 본 다른 기자가 여기자에게 그 이유를 물었다. 그러자 그 여기자는 이렇게 말했다.

◇ 지뢰 탐지 시스템

미 육군에서는 9년간 약 4천만불을 들여 개발한 지뢰 탐지 시스템을 취소하려고 하고 있었다. 프로토타입의 실제 테스트에서 지뢰 탐지율이 너무 낮았기 때문이다. (테스트에서 저금속 대인 지뢰  96% 탐지 실패)

카네기 멜론대 심리학 교수 스타죠프스키는 지뢰 탐지에 대한 소위 아웃라이어 플로이드 로키 락웰을 (평균을 훌쩍 뛰어넘는 탁월한 사람) 찾아갔다.

스타죠프스키 교수는 수십년 동안 개발된 "전문성을 효과적으로 뽑아내는" 방법들을 사용하여 그의 전문성을 끄집어 냈다.

플로이드는 매뉴얼 대로 장비를 사용하지 않았다. 그는 단순히 소리에 반응하지 않고(사실 그는 다른 지뢰 탐지인에 비해 청력이 꽤나 떨어졌다) 패턴을 잡아내고 있었고, 매뉴얼에서 제안하는 속도보다 더 느린 속도(1/3의 속도)로 진행하고, 매뉴얼에 적혀있는 높이(2인치 이상)보다 낮은 높이에서(심지어는 지면에 거의 접촉해서) 탐지기를 사용했고, 지속적으로 탐지기의 민감도 스위치를 조정했다.

스타죠프스키 교수는 플로이드 자신 조차도 인지하지 못하고 있었던 이 비결을 다른 군인들에게 5일간 가르치고 그 효과를 측정하는 실험을 해보았다. 훈련 전에 10%대에 이르던 탐지율은 훈련 후 90%를 넘어서게 되었다.
