◇ Origin of Panic

In Greek mythology, the upper body is a human being, while the lower half of the body, the horseshoe-shaped plate on the legs of sheep, yells to give fear to the enemy when it fights.

It is also night and day and sleep, and when someone interrupts sleep, they make a strange noise and bewilder it.

Thus, Westerners believed that the sheep were suddenly possessed by something, or that the person who went to the mountain felt afraid because of the mischief of a plate that disturbed their faces.

From these acts of terror that Pan is causing, ‘panic’ in English, which means ‘panic’ and it has become used again as nouns such as ‘crisis’, ‘horror’, and ‘candidate’.

◇ 패닉(panic)의 유래

그리스 신화에 나오는 `판(Pan)`이란 신으로부터 나온 말로 상반신은 사람이고, 하반신은 양의 다리에 말굽이 있는 판은 싸울 때 적에게 공포심을 주기 위해 고함을 지른다.

또 밤이고 낮이고 잠을 자는데, 이때 누군가가 수면을 방해하면 이상한 소리를 질러 황당하게 한다.

그래서 서양사람들은 양들이 갑자기 뭔가에 홀린 듯 불안한 상태가 되거나, 산에 간 사람이 공포심을 느끼는 것은 안면(安眠)을 방해받은 판의 장난 때문이라고 믿었다.

판이 일으키는 이런 공포행위로부터 `판의`란 뜻인 영어 `panic`이 생겼고, 다시 `공황`, `공포`, `당화` 등의 명사로도 쓰이게 됐다.

신을 신고 가려운 곳을 긁는 것과 같다 함은 긁어 봐야 신만 긁는 것이므로
