◇ 任重道遠(임중도원)
[맡길 임, 무거울 중, 길 도, 멀 원]

맡아서 해야 할 임무는 막중한데 갈 길은 멀다는 뜻으로 큰 일을 맡아 책임이 무거운 것을 나타내거나, 긴 시간 동안 중대한 임무를 띠고 있는 것을 비유

막중한 임무를 완수하기 위해서는 도량이 넓고 뜻이 굳세어야 함을 강조할 때 쓰이기도 한다.

임중도원의 출전은 논어(論語) 태백편(泰伯篇)으로, 이 편에 실린 선비는 도량이 넓고 의지가 굳지 않으면 안 되니 임무는 막중하고 갈 길은 멀기 때문이다.

인(仁)의 실현을 자기의 임무로 삼았으니 이 또한 막중하지 않은가? 죽은 뒤에야 그만둘 것이니 이 또한 멀지 않은가?라는 증자(曾子)의 말에서 유래한다.
