◇ Suspicious nature

◇ 의심 많은 성격

별자리를 맹신하는  맹구가 있었다. 하루는 맹구의 그런 모습을 어리석다고 생각하는 한 사람이 그에게 나무라듯 물었다.

"그러니까 당신은 별자리 같은 걸 믿는다는 말이죠?"

그러나 맹구가 대답했다.

"아니에요. 전 별자리 같은 건 잘 믿지 않아요. 그리고 덧붙였다

"원래 염소자리는 의심이 많은 성격이거든요."

◇ 의심생암귀 (疑心生暗鬼)
[의심할 의, 마음 심, 날 생, 어두울 암, 귀신 귀]

의심이 생기면 귀신이 생긴다는 뜻으로, 의심으로 인한 망상 또는 선입견으로 인한 판단 착오를 비유한 말.

어떤 사람이 도끼를 잃어버렸다. 도둑 맞았다는 생각이 들자, 그 중에서 이웃집 아이가 수상쩍었다. 그의 걸음걸이를 보아도 그렇고, 안색을 보아도 그렇고, 말투 또한 영락없는 도끼 도둑이었다. 그러나 며칠 후 밭두렁에서 도끼를 찾았다. 집으로 돌아오는 길에 이웃집 아이를 만났는데, 이번에는 그의 거동이 조금도 수상쩍어 보이지 않았다.

어떤 사람이 이웃집 뜰에 말라죽은 오동나무를 보았다. 주인에게 “말라죽은 오동나무는 불길합니다.”하고 충고하였다. 이 말을 들은 주인이 오동나무를 베어버렸다. 베어버린 오동나무를 땔감으로 쓰게 달라고 하자, 주인은 화를 내며 “말라죽은 오동나무를 불길하다고 한 이유는 땔감 욕심에서 비롯된 음흉함이었군.”라고 하였다.

세상 사람들은 자신의 이해와 관련이 없으면 일견 무심하다. 그러나 만약 자신의 이해와 얽히게 되면 아무리 옳은 것도 편견과 선입견으로 먼저 대한다. 이것이 바로 암귀이다.
