◇ Dr. Hyun Shin Kyu

Since the Korean War, the ratio of Mindongsan Mountain in Korea has reached as high as 50 percent. In 1982, however, the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) assessed that Korea was the only country that succeeded in restoring forests after World War II.

The scientist who left a big contribution to Korea's forestation made a big contribution to the recovery of the country's land by developing the country's first forestation doctor, Dr. Hyun Shin-kyu, and Rigiteda pine species, which are strong in pests and cold, and excellent in growth and materials.

First, the Rigiteda pine mixed with the Rigida pine, native to the northeast of the United States, and Theda pine, native to the southeast of the United States. Although strong in pests and colds, the Rigida pine and the Ligida pine, whose growth speed is low, are fast and good in material, but they are weak in cold and poor soil, making the Rigiteda pine trees.

Hyunsa Temple trees are introduced in Europe and are created by hybridizing the already indigenous silver white sheep with the Korean native Suwon Sashimi tree. It first became known as ‘Eunsuwonsashi’ but later as ‘Hyunsashi’ after the name of the current doctor.

The Rigiteda pine was recognized by the FAO for its excellent meat-rearing performance, and the Hyeonsa tree was also in the spotlight enough to be imported from Australia, which was suffering from deciduous disease in 1980.

Thanks to the research by Dr. Hyun Shin-kyu, Korea is now the fourth most forested OECD country after Finland, Sweden and Japan.

◇ 현신규 박사

한국전쟁 이후 우리나라 민둥산 비율은 무려 50%에 달했다. 하지만 1982년 세계식량농업기구 (FAO)는 “한국은 2차 세계대전 이후 산림 복구에 성공한 유일한 국가”라는 평가를 내렸다.

우리나라의 산림녹화에 큰 공헌을 남긴 과학자는 국내 최초 임학박사인 현신규 박사, 현박사는 해충과 추위에 강하고 생장과 재질이 우수한 리기테다 소나무종과 성장이 빠른 현사시 나무를 개발해 국토 회복에 큰 공헌을 했다.

먼저 리기테다 소나무는 미 동북부 원산인 리기다 소나무와 미 동남부 원산인 테다 소나무를 교잡해 만들었다. 해충과 추위에 강하지만 생장 속도가 떨어지는 리기다 소나무와 생장이 빠르고 재질이 좋지만 추위와 척박한 토양에 약한 소나무의 장점만을 취해 리기테다 소나무를 만들었다.

현사시 나무는 유럽에서 도입되어 이미 토착화되어 있던 은백양과 우리나라 토종인 수원사시나무를 교잡해 탄생시킨다. 처음엔 ‘은수원사시’라는 이름으로 보급되었으나, 후에 현 박사의 성을 따서 ‘현사시’로 불리게 됐다.

리기테다 소나무는 FAO에서 탁월한 육종 성과로 인정받았으며, 현사시 나무도 1980년 낙엽병으로 골치를 앓고 있던 호주에서 수입해갈 만큼 주목을 받았다.

현신규 박사의 연구 덕분에 우리나라는 현재 OECD 국가 중 핀란드, 스웨덴, 일본에 이어 네 번째로 숲이 많은 나라가 되었다.
