◇ Former WHO Secretary General Lee Jong-wook, the emperor of vaccines

After graduating from Hanyang University’s engineering college, he entered Seoul National University’s medical school in his mid-20s and attended only libraries, laboratories and anatomy rooms. In particular, Hansen's disease, called leprosy and leprosy, gathered to serve the village where they lived. At the time, only Dr. Lee Jong-wook was the first doctor to directly treat Hansen's disease in Korea.

It has put its efforts into developing vaccines on the front line to combat all diseases around the world, while the United States and Britain have called Lee Jong-wook the emperor of vaccines and the Schweitzer of Asia.

In 1983, the WHO took him politely.

Lee Jong-wook declared a "war on the So-Amabi," saying his future hope, children can't suffer from losing their lives or giving up their lives due to paralysis of their legs.

A year later, the worldwide incidence of polio fell to less than one in 10,000. He later earned the title of the emperor of vaccines and was elected the sixth secretary general of the WHO in January 2003. He became the first Korean to head an international organization. In 2004, Time also named Dr. Lee Jong-wook as the "100 Most Influential People in the World."

◇ 국가별 여론조사

한 여론 조사원이 영국인, 일본인, 미국인, 독일인, 한국인에게 차례대로 물었다.

“당신 나라는 어떤 정신을 강조하나요?

영국인 : 신사도요.

일본인 : 친절이요.

미국인 : 개척정신이요.

독일인 : 근면이요.

그때 한국인이 외쳤다.

◇ 백신의 황제 이종욱 전 WHO 사무총장

한양대학교 공과대학을 졸업하고 20대 중반의 나이로 서울대학교 의과대학에 입학해서 도서관, 실험실, 해부실만 다녔다고 한다. 특히 문둥병, 나병이라고 불리는 한센병자가 모여서 생활하는 마을에 봉사를 다녔다. 당시 한국에서 한센병을 직접 치료하는 의사는 이종욱 박사뿐이었다.

전 세계 모든 질병을 퇴치하기 위해 최전선에서 백신을 개발하는 데 힘을 쏟았고, 미국과 영국은 이종욱을 백신의 황제, 아시아의 슈바이처라고 불렀다.

1983년에 WHO는 그를 정중히 모셔갔다.
이종욱은 미래의 희망인 아이들이 목숨을 잃거나 다리가 마비되어 인생을 포기하는 고통을 줄 수 없다며 '소아마비와의 전쟁'을 선포했다.

1년 후, 전 세계의 소아마비 발병률은 1만 분의 1이하로 떨어졌다. 이후 백신의 황제라는 칭호를 얻게 되고 2003년 1월, WHO 6대 사무총장으로 선출되었다. 한국인 최초의 국제기구 수장이 되었다. 2004년 타임에서는 이종욱 박사를 '세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인'에 선정하기도 했다.
