"I hope your beloved mother, your tears, will not soak this letter; Mother, I volunteered to conduct combat flight training; I will fly the B-26 bomber. I am a pilot, so I am with a bomber on the rider, a navigator on the side, and a machine gun shooter on the rear.

My father is fighting in Korea for the right of everyone to live without fear, and I can finally give him a little strength.

Mother, do not pray for me, but pray for my crew who have been called by my country in this emergency situation. They have a wife and a lover waiting for them to return safely.

I will do my best, and it is always my duty, and good-bye, then.

The letter below is a letter to his mother, volunteering for the Korean War, by Lieutenant Jimmy Vanfried II, the son of Commander Vanfried of the 8th Army.

And that was his last letter.

Jimmy Vanfried II, who scrambled to bomb the Suncheon area south of the Yalu River on April 2, 1952, disappeared from the radar while flying toward the target after contacting the radar of the Gimpo Air Corps at 3 am.

When the search operation began, Commander Vanfried ordered the search to be stopped, saying that the search operation was reckless in the enemy.

Commander Vanfried accepted the sacrifices of American soldiers who fought and died for Korea, a liberal democratic ally, and comforted their families and themselves.

The sons of US military generals who participated in the Korean War were 142 people, including President Eisenhower's son, 35 of whom were killed.

In the Korean War, 54,000 US soldiers were killed and more than 100,000 were injured.

◇ 밴프리트 사령관

"사랑하는 어머니, 어머니의 눈물이 이 편지를 적시지 않았으면 합니다. 어머니 저는 자원해서 전투 비행훈련을 받았습니다. B-26 폭격기를 조종할 것입니다. 저는 조종사이기 때문에 기수에는 폭격수, 옆에는 항법사, 후미에는 기관총 사수와 함께 있습니다. 

아버지는 모든 사람들이 두려움 없이 살 수 있는 권리를 위해 지금 한국에서 싸우고 계십니다. 드디어 저도 아버지께 작은 힘이나마 보태드릴 수 있게  되었습니다.

어머니 저를 위해 기도하지 마시고 그 대신 이 위급한 상황에서 조국의 부름을 받은 저의 승무원들을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 그들에게는, 그들이 무사히 돌아오기만을 기다리는 아내와 연인이 있습니다. 

저는 최선을 다할 것입니다. 그것은 언제나 저의 의무입니다. 그럼 안녕히 계십시오.

아래 편지는 미 8군 밴프리트 사령관의 아들 지미 밴프리트 2세 공군 중위가 6.25 한국전에 자원하면서 어머니에게 보낸 편지다.

그리고 그것이 그의 마지막 편지였다. 

1952년 4월 2일 압록강 남쪽 순천지역을 폭격하기 위해 출격했던 지미 밴프리트 2세는 새벽 세시 김포 비행단의 레이더와 접촉한 후 표적을 향해 날아가던 중 레이더에서 사라졌다. 

이후 수색작전이 시작되자 밴프리트 사령관은 적지에서 수색작전은 무모한 일이라며 수색작업 중단을 지시했다.

밴프리트 사령관은 자유민주주의 동맹국인 한국을 위해 싸우다 전사한 미군인들의 희생을 그와같이 받아들였고 그들의 가족과 자신을 위로했다. 

한국전에 참가한 미군 장성의 아들들은 아이젠하워 대통령의 아들을 비롯 모두 142명, 그 중 35명이 전사했다.

한국전에서 미군 전사자는 모두 54,000여명, 부상자는 10만 명이 넘었다.
