In 2007, a U.S. helicopter unit stationed in Afghanistan conducted an Operation Soccer Chopper to “drop” soccer balls on children in eastern Coast.

◇ 축구 헬기 작전

2007년 아프가니스탄에 주둔하던 미 헬리콥터 부대는 아프가니스탄 동부 코스트주 어린이들에게 축구공을 ‘투하’하는 ‘축구 헬기 작전(Operation Soccer Chopper)’을 벌인 적 있다.

헬기에 공을 싣고 비행하다가 아이들이 보이면 축구공을 떨어뜨려 주는 ‘작전’이었다. 그 당시 외신에 따르면 1천여개가 넘는 공을 투하했는데 처음에는 아이들이 미군 헬기라고 돌을 던졌지만 공을 얻기 위해서 점점 헬기쪽으로 다가오기도 했다고 한다.

이 축구공에는 여러 나라의 국기 문양이 인쇄돼 있었다. 그런데 생각치 못한 사우디아라비아 국기에서 문제가 발생했다. 사우디 국기에는 무슬림의 신앙고백인 코란의 핵심 구절이 쓰여 있다. 이는 무슬림들은 평생 실천해야 할 5대 의무 중 하나로 여겨 매일 암송한다.

즉, 미군이 떨어뜨린 축구공을 현지 무슬림들이 코란의 성스러운 구절을 발로 차야 하는 상황이 된 것이다.

살다보면 모든 일이 좋은 의도로 시작했지만 잘못되는 경우도 있다. 매사 하나하나 상대의 입장에서 살펴보는 꼼꼼함이 필요하다.
