When the Korean War broke out, Ethiopia gathered volunteers from the 1st Guard Division under the Emperor, who was the best elite unit, and organized one battalion.

And the Emperor gives the dispatching army the title "Kagnew"; the meaning of Gangnyu means "establishing order in chaos" or "defeating the enemy in the first half."

After arriving in Busan in May 1951, 6,037 people were dispatched five times until the withdrawal in 1956, causing considerable damage to 121 deaths and 536 wounded. (Among the Gangnyeong battalions who visited Korea, Vikilla Abebe, who later became a legendary marathoner, was also included in the world history.)

The Gangnyeong unit was a terror to the enemy. They showed their ability to win both 253 large and small battles, including reconnaissance and fighting with the enemy, and highland recapture, shooter, and Jinji, and especially the use of the gold coin district 'Iron Triangle' in October 1952 showed their bravery.

The Gangnyeong unit deployed one company in the main lowland valley, which comes to the Iron Triangle, and defeated the enemy for four hours in the attack of the Chinese army with tactics.

The Gang New troops did not leave wounded and dead in battle, and when they were captured, they were tracked to the end and rescued.

Currently, there is a memorial hall for the Ethiopian Korean War in Chuncheon-dong, Gangwon-do.

◇ 에티오피아 강뉴 부대

한국전쟁이 발발하자 에티오피아는 최고 정예부대였던 황제 직속의 제 1근위사단에서 지원자들을 모아 1개 대대를 편성하여 보냈다.

그리고 황제는 파병군대에 "강뉴대대 (Kagnew)"라는 칭호를 내린다. 강뉴의 뜻은 '혼돈에서 질서를 확립하다' 또는 '적을 초전에 격파하다'라는 두가지 의미가 있다.

1951년 5월 부산에 도착 후 1956년 완전히 철수할 때까지 5차례에 걸쳐 연 인원 6,037명이 파견되어 전사자 121명, 부상자 536명이라는 적지 않은 피해를 입었다. (한국을 찾았던 강뉴 대대원 중에는 훗날 전설의 마라토너로 세계사에 이름을 남기는 비킬라 아베베도 포함돼 있었다.)

강뉴부대는 적에게 공포의 대상이었다. 이들은 정찰과 적과의 교전을 비롯해 고지탈환과 사수, 진지방어 등 253번의 크고작은 전투에서 모두 승리하는 저력을 발휘하였고, 특히 1952년 10월 금화지구 '철의 삼각지'를 사수한 것은 이들의 용맹성을 잘 보여줬다.

강뉴부대는 철의 삼각지로 오는 주 저지선 계곡에 1개 중대를 배치하여 인해전술을 앞세운 중공군의 공격에도 4시간동안 백병전을 벌여 적들을 물리쳤다.

강뉴부대원들은 전투 중 부상자와 사망자를 전장에 남겨두지 않았으며 포로가 발생하면 끝까지 추적해 구출했다.

현재 강원도 춘천시 근화동에는 에티오피아 한국전 참전 기념관이 있다.
