 Say something on time

 Mr. Gong talked about being a resonator of the Gong Dynasty and a character of the boarding character.

◇ 시연후언 (時然後言)
제때에 할 말을 하다.

공 선생이 위나라 공명가와 공숙문자의 사람됨을 이야기 했다.

"참말인가요, 선생님은 그다지 말이 없으시고 실없이 웃지도 않으시고 가지려고 하지도 않으신다는 게."

공명가가 말했다.

"그 이야기는 전해주는 사람이 부풀린 것입니다. 선생님은 때를 맞춰서 한마디 하므로 주위 사람들이 그분의 말씀을 거북해하지 않고, 다들 즐거워한 뒤에 밝게 웃으니 주위 사람들이 그분의 웃음을 싫어하지 않습니다. 분수에 맞아야 자기 것으로 가지므로 주위 사람들이 그분의 소유에 신경 쓰지 않습니다."


마음이 안정된 자는 말 수가 적다. 마음을 안정시키는 일은 말 수를 줄이는 것에서 시작한다.

때가 된 뒤에 말을 한다면 말이 간략하지 않을 수 없다. 일이 많은 사람은 세 가지에 조심해야 한다. 하나는 말을 해야 할 때와 하지 않을 때를 구별할 줄 알아야 한다.

다음으로 실없이 웃지 않아야 한다.
사람들에게 불필요한 인상을 주며 오해를 살 수 있다. 그리고 공짜를 넙죽 받지 않아야 한다.

말은 때에 맞아야 하고, 행은 사람들이 즐거워해야(호응해야) 하며, 물은 분수(정의)에 맞아야 한다. 모두 이 기준에 들어 맞으므로 어느 하나 흠 잡을것이 없는 것이다.

말이 많고 생각이 많은 것은 마음을 수양하는 데 가장 해롭다.
