◇ 두 손가락으로 거수경례 하는 폴란드군

2차 세계대전 당시 폴란드군과 연합군이 '거수경례'로 인해 오해가 생긴 일화가 있다. 두 손가락만 들고 거수경례를 하는 폴란드군의 경례 전통을 오해한 연합군 장교가 폴란드 군인들과 언쟁을 벌였기 때문이다.

거수경례는 대다수 국가에서 다섯손가락을 모두 편 채 손의 날이 보이도록 하기 때문에 연합국 장교들 입장에서는 폴란드식 경례가 자신들을 조롱하는 것이라 오해했던 것이다.

폴란드 군인의 두 손가락 경례는 200년 넘는 전통을 가진 경례이자 폴란드의 아픈 역사를 담고 있는 경례다. 18세기 말, 러시아와 오스트리아, 프러시아 3국의 분할로 국가를 상실한 폴란드인들은 1830년, 바르샤바 봉기를 통해 전국적인 독립운동을 일으켰다. 당시 폴란드 동부 일대를 지배하고 있던 러시아는 대군을 동원해 이를 잔인하게 진압했고, 폴란드인들은 끝까지 저항했지만 패배했다.

이 두 손가락 경례는 이때 만들어졌다. 이 독립전쟁 당시 주요 전투였던 '오르신카 그로호프스카 전투(Battle of Olszynka Grochowska)'에서 대포 파편에 맞아 손가락 3개를 읽은 병사가 남은 두 손가락으로 했던 경례에서 유래됐다.

이후 폴란드에서는 모든 거수경례에 이 두 손가락 경례를 사용하게 됐으며 두 손가락의 의미는 '조국'과 '명예'다.
