위나라 왕이 명의인 3째 편작에게 물었다.

"3형제 중 누가 가장 뛰어난 명의인가?"

"큰 형님이 가장 뛰어나고, 그 다음은 둘째 형님이며, 제가 가장 아래입니다."

편작의 이름이 가장 널리 알려진 이유가 궁금해진 왕이 또 묻자 다음과 같이 대답했다.

"큰 형님은 환자가 아픔을 느끼기 전에 목소리른 듣고 얼굴빛을 보고 장차 병이 있을 것을 알고 병이 나기 전에 병의 원인을 제거해 줍니다. 환자는 아파 보기도 전에 치료를 받게 되는 것입니다. 그러나 환자는 큰 형님이 고통을 미리 제거해 주었다는 사실을 모릅니다. 그래서 큰 형님이 명의로 알려지지 않은 것입니다.

둘째 형님은 환자의 병세가 미미할 때 그의 병을 알고 치료해 줍니다. 그러므로 환자는 둘째 형님이 자신의 큰 병을 미리 낫게 해주었다는 것을 잘 모릅니다.

그런데 제 경우는 환자의 병이 커지고 고통으로 신음 할 때에야 비로소 병을 알아냅니다. 그의 병이 심하기 때문에 맥을 짚어 보고, 진기한 약을 먹이고, 살을 도려내는 수술을 합니다. 사람들은 저의 이런 행위를 보고 나서야 자신의 병을 고쳐 주었다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 이것이 바로 제가 명의로 소문이 난 이유입니다."

안전도 마찬가지로 미리 예견하여 사전에 취약요소를 제거하는것이 으뜸이고, 다음은 작은 사고를 발견하여 이에 이어지는 사고를 예방하는 것이 다음이며, 마지막은 큰 사고를 겪은 후에 아픔을 이겨내며 고치는 것이라 할 수 있다.
