◇ Sejong's Announcement

You should do your best without ignoring even the slightest thing. If you do your best in small things, you will be sincere. If you're serious, it's superficial, it's bright.

When it is lightened, you will change quickly, and when you change, you will grow.

So only the most earnest people in the world can change me and the world.

* If the people are right in criticizing me, it is my fault and I should not be punished.

How can I blame the people because even if they criticized me with misunderstanding and wrong intentions, I have a responsibility for not making them feel that way?

◇ 民無信不立

If the people do not believe, they cannot exist.

When Jagong asked Confucius one day about the basics of politics, Confucius said, "The key elements of politics are to satisfy food, to make weapons sufficient, and to make the people believe (the monarch).

Jagong asked, among these three, which should be given up first.

Confucius said, without hesitation, that it was a weapon.

When he asked Confucius what else he could throw away, he said, "Food."

He then cited trust with the people as something that should never be abandoned.

◇ Machiavelli's famous saying

It is better to set the right example than infinite charity.

Be prepared for a storm when the sea is calm.

Title does not elevate man, but makes him shine.

It is difficult to make a difference, but it is more difficult to maintain it.

A true leader must always be ready to change his direction as the wind and waves of fate turn.

Among individuals, laws, contracts or agreements help to keep faith. However, there is trust only by force among those in power.

◇ 세종 어록

작은 일에도 무시하지 않고 최선을 다해야 한다. 작은 일에도 최선을 다하면 정성스럽게 된다. 정성스럽게 되면 겉에 드러나고 겉으로 드러나면 이내 밝아지고
밝아지면 남을 감동시키고 남을 감동시키면 이내 변하게 되고 변하게 되면 생육이 된다.
그러니 오직 세상에서 지극히 정성을 다하는 사람만이 나와 세상을 변하게 할 수 있는 것이다.

* 백성이 나를 비판하는 내용이 옳다면 그것은 나의 잘못이니 처벌해서는 안 되는 것이오.

설령 오해와 그릇된 마음으로 나를 비판했다고 해도 그런 마음을 아예 품지 않도록 만들지 못한 내 책임이 있는 것이니 어찌 백성을 탓할 것인가?


◇ 民無信不立(민무신불립)
백성이 믿어주지 않으면 존립할 수 없다.
- 논어 안연편

자공이 어느 날 공자에게 정치의 기본에 대해 묻자 공자는 정치의 핵심 요소로 식량을 충족시키는 것, 병기를 충분하게 하는 것, 백성들이 (군주를) 믿게 하는 것을 꼽았다.

자공은 이 세 가지 중에서 우선 무엇을 포기해야 하느냐고 물었다.
이에 공자는 주저 없이 병기라고 했다.

다시 공자에게 남아있는 것 중에서 또 무엇을 버리면 되느냐고 하자 이에 식량이라고 했다.

그러고는 결코 버려서는 안 될 것으로서 백성들과의 신뢰를 꼽았다.


◇ 마키아벨리 명언

올바른 모범을 보여주는 것은 무한한 자선보다 낫다.

바다가 고요할 때 폭풍우를 대비하라.

직함이 인간을 높이는 것이 아니라 인간이 직함을 빛나게 해준다.

변화를 일으키는 것은 어렵지만 변화를 유지하는 것은 더 어렵다.

진정한 지도자는 운명의 바람과 물결의 전환에 따라 방향을 변경할 수 있는 마음의 준비가 항상 되어 있어야 한다.

개인들 사이에서는 법률이나 계약서나 협정이 신의를 지키는 데 도움이 된다. 그러나 권력자들 사이에서는 오직 힘에 의해서만 신의가 지켜진다.
