공자와 자로, Zaro asked Confucius

◇ Zaro asked Confucius one day.

"Teacher, if you have any business leading the Three Kingdoms, who would you like to join?"

Since he was famous for his bravery and martial arts, Zaro wanted Confucius to tell him that he was with him.

However, Confucius's answer was different from Zaro's expectation.

"I will not be with him who has no regrets even if he dies trying to catch a tiger with his bare hands and cross the river with his bare body. I will certainly be afraid when I go to work, but I will be with those who do their best to make it happen."

Achieving a goal and making things successful is not just about courage. A straight-line, radical, like a egret, is apt to fail after recklessly pushing for it without making a fuss.

Confucius urges Jaro to think carefully before taking action and approach carefully.

In the word "careful" originally, "Joe" is a picture of three birds sitting on a tree with their hands on their hands. The bird sitting on the tree never knows when it will fly. To catch such birds, you must prepare thoroughly and breathe in a calm and slow manner.

Even if it looks small and small, don't take it lightly and be careful. Confucius said, "Be afraid" to consider all possibilities and to thoroughly prepare for possible risks.

◇ 어느 날 자로가 공자에게 물었다.

“선생님, 삼군(三軍)을 통솔하실 일이 있다면 누구와 함께 하시겠습니까?”

용맹과 무예가 뛰어나기로 이름이 높았던 자로였기 때문에 자로는 공자가 자신과 함께 하겠다고 말해주길 바랬다.

하지만 공자의 대답은 자로의 기대와 달랐다.

“맨손으로 호랑이를 잡으려 하고 맨몸으로 강을 건너려 하다가 죽어도 후회함이 없는 자와 나는 함께 하지 않을 것이다. 나는 일에 임할 때는 반드시 두려워하되, 힘껏 도모하여 일을 성사시키고 마는 사람, 그런 사람과 함께 할 것이다.”

목표를 이루고, 일을 성공시키는 것은 용기만 있다고 되는 것이 아니다. 자로와 같이 직선적이고 과격한 사람은 물불가리지 않고 무모하게 덤비다가 실패하기 쉽다.

공자는 자로에게 행동에 나서기 전에 먼저 사려 깊게 생각할 것, 조심스럽게 접근할 것을 당부하고 있다.

원래 ‘조심(操心)’ 이란 단어에서 ‘조(操)’ 자는 나무 위에 앉은 세 마리의 새(品+木)를 손으로 잡는 모습을 형상화한 것이다. 나무 위에 앉은 새는 언제 날아갈지 모른다. 그런 새를 잡으려면 준비를 철저히 하고 호흡을 가다듬어 천천히, 차분하게 다가서야 한다.

작고 사소해 보이는 일이라 해도 가볍게 여기지 말고 신중하라는 것이다. 모든 가능성을 따져보고, 예상되는 리스크에 대비하여 철저히 준비하고 임하라는 뜻에서 공자는 ‘두려워하라’고 말했다.
