종전협상, General Lee

◇ The Civil War ended with the victory, which declared the liberation of slaves. The generals who lead the two camps' forces are Gen. Grant of the North and Gen. Lee of the South.

The two are West Point alumni, but General Lee graduated at the top of his class, while General Grant began his military career on the periphery due to his poor performance.

It was customary for the two, who met at the end of the inter-Korean war, to ask the defeated side for many trophies. But General Grant makes a surprising offer at previous negotiations. To the enemy, who has long been driving his beloved men to the ground.

"Don't call them prisoners, don't call them losers."

"Don't have any party for victory."

General Grant's great negotiations are by far the best of all the examples of negotiations today.

1875년 9월 20일 : 일본 군함 운요호(雲楊號)가 조선 해안 탐사를 빙자하여 강화도와 영종도를 습격하고 양민을 학살하여 주변까지 방화하는 만행을 일으킨 사건. (조선군의 피해는 전사 35명, 포로 16명. 일본군 경상자 2명)


◇ 남북전쟁은 노예해방을 선언한 북군의 승리로 끝났다. 두 진영의 군대를 이끄는 장군은 북군 그랜트장군과 남군 리 장군.

두 사람은 웨스트포인트 동기생이지만 리 장군은 수석졸업을 한 반면 그랜트 장군은 성적이 좋지않아 변방에서 군생활을 시작했다.

남북전쟁이 끝난 자리의 "종전협상" 자리에서 만난 두사람, 일반적으로 승리한 측이 많은 전리품을 패전한 측에 요구하는게 관례였다. 그러나 그랜트 장군은 종전협상 자리에서 놀라운 제안을 한다. 오랜기간 동안 자신의 사랑하는 부하들을 사지로 몰았던 적군에게...

* 종전협상 제안 내용

타고 갈 말과 2만 명분의 식량을 준비할 테니 다들 고향 가족에게로 떠나시오.

그리고 그랜트 장군은 부하들에게 지시한다.

"그들을 포로라고 부르지말고, 패잔병이라고도 말하지 말라"

"승리에 대한 어떠한 파티도 하지마라"

이 협상으로 인해 미국은 다시 둘로 갈라서는 길을 선택하지 않고 놀라운 발전을 거듭하게 된다.

그랜트 장군의 위대한 협상은 오늘날에도 수많은 협상사례 가운데 단연 최고의 협상으로 손꼽힌다.


◇ 負重致遠(부중치원)
[질 부, 무거울 중, 보낼 치, 멀 원]

무거운 짐을 지고 먼 곳을 향해 간다는 뜻으로, 중요한 직책을 맡은 것을 뜻함.
