The word "mainstream" means brushing your teeth with stones and making running water full, which is a metaphor for using deterrence without acknowledging your mistakes.

◇ 수석침류(漱石枕流)
[양치질 수, 돌 석, 베개 침, 흐를 류]

돌로 양치질하고 흐르는 물을 베개 삼는다.
실수를 인정하려 들지 않거나, 남에게 지지 않으려고 억지를 부리는 것을 비유하는 말.

진나라에 손초(孫楚)라는 사람이 있었다.
그는 젊은 시절 벼슬길에 가지 않고 속세를 따나 산림에 은거하기로 결심하고는 친구 왕제(王濟)에게 자신의 생각을 이야기 했다.

그는 “돌을 베개 삼아 눕고 흐르는 물로 양치질하는 생활을 하고 싶다(枕石漱流)”고 말해야 하는데 그만
“돌로 양치질하고 흐르는 물을 베개 삼겠다(漱石枕流)”고 말해버렸다.

이에 왕제가 웃으며 실언임을 지적하자 손초는 자신의 실수를 인정하고 싶지 않아서 억지를 부리며 이렇게 말했다.

"냇물로 베개를 삼는 것은 바로 귀를 씻고자 함이요, 돌로 양치질하는 것은 치아를 갈고자 함이네."

수석침류(漱石枕流)는 돌로 양치질하고 흐르는 물을 배게 삼는다는 뜻으로 자신의 실수를 인정하지 않고 억지를 쓰는 것을 비유한 말이다.
