◇ 고슴도치와 여우의 전략

수필 <고슴도치와 여우>에서 이사야 벌린(Isaiah Berlin)은 고대 그리스 우화를 토대로 세상 사람들을 고슴도치들과 여우들로 나누었다.

"여우는 많은 것을 알지만, 고슴도치는 한 가지 큰 것을 안다."

여우는 고슴도치를 기습할 복잡한 전략들을 무수히 짜낼 줄 아는 교활한 동물이다. 날이 밝고 날이 어두워지도록 여우는 고슴도치 굴 주변을 빙빙 돌며 고슴도치를 덮칠 완벽한 순간을 기다린다. 민첩하고 늘씬하고 잘생기고 발빠르고 간사한 여우가 확실한 승자일 것 같다.

반면에 고슴도치는 호저와 작은 아르마딜로를 유전자 합성해 놓은 것 같은 촌스러운 동물이다. 놈은 어기적어기적 점심거리를 찾아다니고 집을 돌보며 단순한 일상에 열중한다.

여우는 갈림길에서 교활한 침묵 속에 고슴도치를 기다리며 공격한다. 그때 고슴도치는 몸을 말아 동그란 작은 공으로 변신한다. 공 둘레에는 작은 가시가 사방으로 돋아나 있다. 사냥감 앞으로 달려온 여우는 고슴도치의 방어 태세를 보고 공격을 멈춘다. 여우는 숲 속으로 퇴각하여 새로운 공격 전략 구상에 착수한다.

고슴도치와 여우 사이에 이런 싸움의 비슷한 버전들이 매일같이 펼쳐지는데 여우가 훨씬 교활함에도 이기는 건 늘 고슴도치다.
