연리목 (連理木), 누가 이길까? Who will win?

◇ Who will win?

The story of an Indian grandfather who told it to his grandson.

◇ 連理木

As trees grow too close to each other, the stem that grows is joined together into a single tree trunk.

Pine trees and oak lotus trees are growing near the grave of General Lee Young-nam (a famous Imjin Japanese war shrine) in Jijeon-ri, Deoksan-myeon, Jincheon-gun, North Chungcheong Province.

The general once helped Wongyun defend the enemy during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, but he later entered the reign of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, who won consecutive battles and died in the Battle of Noryang

"General, the man I was most afraid of in the world was you. The one who was most proud of was Gen. I really wanted to look like a general." He died in the arms of Admiral Yi, bloodied all over his body.

General Lee said, "You were the greatest longevity," and closes your eyes with his hands and covers his armor. Armor is life to a master during the war. Covering one's life-like armor to one's subordinates is determined to share one's life.

◇ 누가 이길까?

어느 인디언 할아버지가 손자에게 들려줬다는 이야기

"우리 마음속에는 착한 늑대와 나쁜 늑대가 있어서 그 둘은 늘 서로 싸운단다. 그 둘 중 누가 이길까?

그건 우리가 어느 늑대에 먹이를 주느냐에 달려있단다."


◇ 연리목 (連理木)
[이을 연, 이치 리 또는 결 리, 나무 連理木]

나무가 자라면서 서로 너무 가까이 자라면서 성장한 줄기가 맞닿아 한나무 줄기로 합쳐져 자라는 현상을 말한다.

충북 진천군 덕산면 지전리 이영남 장군 묘소(임진왜란 명장) 부근에는 소나무와 참나무 연리목이 자라고 있다.

장군은 임진왜란 당시 한때 원균을 도와 왜적을 방어하기도 했지만 후에 삼도수군통제사 이순신의 휘하로 들어가 연전연승하다 노량해전에서 죽음을 함께한 강직한 장수였다

“장군, 제가 이 세상에서 가장 두려워했던 분이 장군이셨습니다. 가장 자랑스러워했던 분도 장군이십니다. 진정으로 장군을 닮고 싶었습니다." 온몸이 피투성이가 된 채 이순신장군의 품에서 전사했다.

이순신장군은 ‘자네는 가장 훌륭한 장수였다’며 손으로 눈을 감겨주고 자신의 갑옷을 벗어 덮어준다. 전쟁 중에 장수에게 있어 갑옷은 목숨이다. 목숨과도 같은 자신의 갑옷을 부하에게 덮어준다는 것은 목숨을 나누겠다는 결연한 의지다.

이영남 장군의 묘소 옆에는 장군이 아꼈던 애마 무덤도 있다. 매우 잘 달리는 훌륭한 말을 비유해서 '용마(龍馬)'라 했다.
