These companies are gaining popularity by providing services to arrange discussion meetings in political, economic and social sectors, and also by creating paid reading groups that read common themes and books and share opinions with each other.

In an era where people subscribe to books, they pay 10,000 won and read thousands of books, and the bedspreads of start-ups are e-books and subscriptions. For only 9,900 won per month, you can read more than 30,000 novels, economic and management books without limit. The number of subscribers has easily surpassed 700,000 in just two years of service.

The "Ready Select," the monthly fixed-rate model of e-book startup Ready Books, also offers unlimited views of some 4,000 e-books at 6,500 won per month.

Publicis will offer articles written by experts in various fields such as marketing, IT, fashion, law and accounting for 21,900 won per month along with photos and videos. There are also translations of columns or series by leading foreign media outlets such as the New York Times and the Financial Times.

Reading volume is also increasing as it is serviced with smartphone apps or dedicated e-book terminals. Members read eight books a month on average (the average Korean adult reads 8.3 books a year).

Trevari has about 20 members of each reading group who read and discuss the same book once or twice a week. They can meet people from various backgrounds and build personal connections.

독서도 구독하는 시대, 1만원 내고 수천권 읽어 독서 스타트업들의 주무기는 전자책과 구독. 매월 9900원만 내면 3만권이 넘는 소설·경제·경영 서적 등을 무제한으로 읽을 수 있다. 서비스 2년 만에 가입자 수가 70만명을 훌쩍 넘겼다.

전자책 스타트업인 리디북스의 월정액 모델인 '리디 셀렉트'도 전자책 4000여 권을 월 6500원에 무제한으로 볼 수 있다.

퍼블리는 월 2만1900원을 내면 마케팅·IT·패션·법·회계 등 다양한 분야의 전문가들이 쓴 글을 사진·동영상과 함께 제공한다. 뉴욕타임스, 파이낸셜타임스 등 해외 유력 언론사의 칼럼이나 시리즈를 번역한 콘텐츠도 있다.

스마트폰 앱이나 전용 전자책 단말기로 서비스하기 때문에 독서량도 늘어나고 있다. 회원들은 월평균 8권씩 책을 읽는 것으로 집계됐다. (한국 성인 평균 독서량 연 8.3권)

트레바리는 독서 모임 하나당 20여 명의 회원이 같은 책을 읽고 토론하는 자리를 주 1∼2회씩 가진다. 이를 통에서 다양한 직군의 사람들을 만나 인맥도 쌓을 수 있다.
