Sohn won the world record of 2 hours 29 minutes 19 seconds at the 1936 11th Olympic Games in Berlin.  When the Japanese flag was raised at the award ceremony and Kimigayo resonated, Son Ki-jeong covered his chest in a laurel pot and bowed his head.  The third place was taken by Nam Seung-ryong of Korea.

 After a match, a reporter asked why he had speeded up from the return point and replied, "Human body is capable of unimaginably impossible things depending on the will and spirit of the human body."

 The bronze helmet of the time was made in Corinth, Greece, to offer and pray for victory at the ancient Olympia festival at Olympia Zeus in the 6th century BC.

 However, this pitch could not be delivered to Sohn Ki-jung because the act of giving and receiving money was against Olympic amateurism.

 Afterwards, the German-born Nosu-woong, a Korean-American, visited a museum in Germany for a year and a half and finally found it at the Charlottenburg National Museum in Berlin.

 In 1986, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Olympics, the German (West Germany) Olympic Committee sent a letter to Sohn Ki-jung that he decided to return the bronze helmet.

 Still, the official IOC records indicate that the 1936 Berlin Olympic Marathon Gold Medal and Bronze Medalist were "Kitei Son and Shoryu Nan" of Japanese nationality (JPN).

 He tried to recover his name but has not yet made it according to the IOC's policy that the official record could not be changed.  However, the profile details of Gitei Son are accompanied by an explanation that Son Ki-jung and Nam Seung-ryong were forced to compete in the Japanese name under Japanese rule.

◇ 손기정 선수는 1936년 제11회 베를린 올림픽 대회에서 2시간 29분 19초의 세계신기록으로 우승했다. 시상식에서 일본국기가 올라가고 기미가요가 울려퍼질 때 손기정은 가슴의 일장기를 월계수 화분으로 가리고 고개를 숙였다. 3위는 한국의 남승룡이 차지했다.

경기 후 한 기자가 반환점부터 스피드를 낸 이유를 묻자, "인간의 육체란 의지와 정신에 따라 상상할 수 없을 만큼 불가능한 일을 가능하게 한다"고 대답하여 그의 스포츠맨십은 후배 선수들에게 교훈으로 남았다.

당시 우승 부상인 청동투구는 기원전 6세기 올림피아 제우스 신전에서 고대 올림피아 제전 경기 때 승리를 기원하고 감사하는 뜻으로 봉납하기 위해 그리스 코린트에서 제작됐다.

그러나 이 투구는 금품을 주고받는 행위는 올림픽정신인 아마추어리즘에 어긋난다 하여 손기정 선수에게 전달될 수 없었다.

이후 행방이 묘연한 투구를 독일교포 노수웅씨가 1년 반 동안이나 독일내 박물관을 찾아다니다 마침내 베를린 샤를로텐부르크 국립박물관에서 발견했다.

베를린 올림픽 50주년을 맞은 1986년 독일(서독) 올림픽위원회는 손기정에게 “청동투구를 돌려주기로 했다”는 서한을 보낸다.

아직도 IOC 공식 기록에는 1936년 베를린 올림픽 마라톤 금메달, 동메달리스트를 일본 국적(JPN)의 '기테이 손과 쇼류 난’이라고 표기해놓고 있다.

이름을 회복하려 했지만 공식기록을 바꿀 수 없다는 IOC의 방침에 따라 아직까지 성사시키지 못했다. 다만 ‘기테이 손’의 프로필 세부내용에는 손기정과 남승룡 선수가 일제 치하에서 일본 이름으로 대회출전을 강요당했다는 내용의 설명문이 달려 있다.
