◇ Mozart visited a music lover’s house one day. The 12-year-old son of the house played the piano very well. When the boy saw Mozart, he quickly asked questions.

"I really want to compose. Please tell me what to start with."

But Mozart, who did not want to be called a child prodigy, refused to do so.

"You are too young. I can only say that."

Then the boy said with great dissatisfaction.

"But didn't you write music since you were younger?"

"But I didn't ask anyone what to do. I did it alone."

◇Franklin Roosevelt was serving as vice naval secretary before becoming president.

One day a very close friend of mine came to Roosevelt and told him that he was going to go to a small island in the Caribbean.

Are rumors of building a submarine base true?"

Roosevelt looked around carefully, then lowered his voice and asked, "Can you keep your secret?"

 

"Of course."

 

Then Roosevelt smiled and said, "Well, then I can keep a secret, too."

 

Roosevelt expressed his refusal euphemistically to a friend's question with a light joke.

He chose the most effective solution not to embarrass his friend, maintaining his principled position that no one can reveal the secrets of the nation.

◇ (敬畏四知

You must fear that at least four of us, you and I, know anything.

◇ 모차르트가 어느 날 음악 애호가의 집을 방문하였다. 그 집의 12살난 아들은 피아노를 매우 잘 쳤다. 그 소년은 모차르트를 보자 얼른 질문을 하였다.

"저는 작곡이 무척하고 싶습니다. 무엇부터 시작해야 하는지 가르쳐 주십시오."

그러나 신동이라는 말을 듣기 싫어했던 모차르트는 이를 거절하며 말했다.

"너는 너무 어리다. 난 그말 밖에 말할 수 없다."

그러자 소년은 매우 불만스럽게 말했다.

"하지만 선생님께서는 더 어려서부터 작곡을 하시지 않았습니까?"

"하지만 나는 어떻게 해야 좋을지 누구에게 묻지 않았다. 난 혼자 했어."


◇ 플랭클린 루스벨트는 대통령이 되기 전, 해군차관보로 재직하고 있었다.

어느날 아주 절친한 친구가 찾아와 루스벨트에게 카리브 해의 작은 섬에
잠수함 기지를 건설한다는 소문이 사실이냐고 물었다.

루스벨트는 조심스럽게 주변을 둘러보더니, 목소리를 낮추어 “자네 비밀을 지킬 수 있나?”라고 물었다.
 
“물론이지”
 
그러자 루스벨트는 미소를 지으며 “그렇다면 말이지, 나도 비밀을 지킬 수 있다네”라고 말했다.
 
루스벨트는 가벼운 농담으로 친구의 질문에 완곡하게 거절의 뜻을 표현했다.

그는 아무리 친구라도 국가의 비밀을 발설할 수 없다는 원칙적인 입장을 견지하면서 친구를 난처하게 만들지 않는 가장 효과적인 해결방법을 선택한 것이다.


◇ 경외사지(敬畏四知)
[공경할 경, 두려워할 외, 넉 사, 알 지]

무슨 일이든 최소한 하늘과 땅, 너와 나, 넷은 알고 있음을 두려워해야 한다.
