◇ 백유읍장 (伯兪泣杖)
[맏 백, 그러할 유, 울 읍, 몽둥이 장]

'백유(伯兪)가 매를 맞으며 운다'는 뜻으로, 늙고 쇠약해진 어머니의 모습을 보고 슬퍼함.

백유(伯兪)가 잘못을 저질러 그 어머니가 매질을 하자, 백유(伯兪)가 울었다. 어머니가 "다른 날(지난 날)에 매를 들 때는 일찍이 운 적이 없었거늘, 지금 우는 까닭은 무엇이냐?"고 물었다.

이에 백유(伯兪)가 "전에 죄를 지어 매를 맞을 때는 언제나 그 매가 아팠는데, 지금은 어머니의 힘이 모자라 능히 저를 아프게 하지 못합니다. 이런 까닭으로 울었습니다."하고 대답(對答)했다.
