◇ Name of U.S. military base in Korea

The names of all U.S. military bases in Korea are in the form of the 00 Camp, which they mostly have stories named after American soldiers killed in the Korean War and other countries.

The U.S. 2nd Infantry Division's headquarters, Camp Red Cloud, was named in 1957 in honor of a Red Cloud corporal from the 24th Infantry Division who was decorated for his record during the Korean War, and Camp Casey from Dongducheon, also a base of the 2nd Infantry Division, participated in the Korean War. It is named after Major Casey, who died in the plane crash.

The "Camp Walker" in Daegu was named in memory of Lt. Gen. Walker, who was killed in a car accident in 1950, while Wonju's "Camp Long" was named in memory of Longjung, who was decorated for his record in the Battle of Hoengseong in 1951.

Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek is named after Humphrey, who was killed in a helicopter accident in 1961.

Camp Stanley in Uijeongbu named Stanley, who died during World War II.

Camp Henry in Daegu was named after Lt. Henry, a second lieutenant from the 2nd Infantry Division who was decorated for his battle in Andong in 1950, while Hartel House, a restaurant at the 8th U.S. Army base in Yongsan, was named after Hartel, a second lieutenant from the 2nd Infantry Division, who was decorated for his record in the Battle of Gobangsanri in 1951, and Collier, a front-line guard post near Panmunjom, was named after the 6.259th Division.

Camp Bonifas, a security unit at Panmunjom, was named in 86 in honor of Captain Boniface, who was killed in the 1976 incident on the North Korean border village of Panmunjom's axe-murder.

◇ 주한 미군기지 이름

주한 미군기지들의 이름은 모두 00캠프의 형식을 띄고 있는데 이들은 대부분 한국전 등에서 희생된 미군 장병들의 이름을 따서 만든 사연을 갖고 있다.

미 2사단 본부인 의정부 '캠프 레드 클라우드'는 6.25 전쟁때 전과를 올려 훈장을 받은 24사단 소속 레드 클라우드 상병을 기려 1957년 이같은 이름이 붙여졌고, 역시 미 2사단 기지인 동두천의 '캠프 케이시'는한국전에 참전했다 비행기 추락으로 숨진 케이시 소령의 이름을 따왔다.

대구에 있는 '캠프 워커'는 1950년 자동차 사고로 숨진 워커중장을, 원주의 '캠프 롱'은 1951년 횡성전투에서의 전과로 훈장을 받은 롱중사를 각각 기려 명명됐다.

평택에 있는 '캠프 험프리'는 1961년 헬기사고로 숨진 험프리 준위의 이름을,
의정부에 있는 '캠프 스탠리'는 2차 대전중 숨진 스탠리대령의 이름을 붙였다.

또 공훈이 있는 부대원을 기리기 위해 부대이름을 짓는 경우도 많다.

대구에 있는 '캠프 헨리'는 1950년 안동지구에서의 전투로 훈장을 받은 2사단 소속 헨리 중위의 이름을 딴 것이고, 용산 미8군기지 식당인 '하텔 하우스'는 1951년 고방산리 전투에서의 전과로 훈장을 받은 2사단 소속 하텔 중위를, 판문점 인근지역 최전방 초소인 '오울렛'과 '콜리어'는 6.25때 훈장을 받은 오울렛(9사단)과 콜리어(40사단) 사병을 기려 이름이 붙여졌다.

판문점 경비부대인 '캠프 보니파스'는 1976년 판문점 도끼만행 사건 때 희생된 보니파스대위를 기려 86년 명명되었다.
