◇ Hogback of a heaven for dementia patients

The Netherlands' Hogweyk, designed as a heaven for dementia patients, is a place where dementia patients live in a virtual village.

Hogback has a 4,500-pyeong site with coffee shops, supermarkets, restaurants, parks and beauty salons. Residents enjoy their daily lives in the village, growing vegetables on farms, and enjoying light hobbies such as worship and art and cooking at churches.

However, dementia villages are not exactly the same as ordinary villages. Their shopping malls do not have a price tag on them, nor do hair salons pay for them. This is because the staff deployed at each store are not actual personnel, but nursing nurses, caregivers, and elderly doctors. They live with dementia patients in the village and help them. Rather than interfering in behavior, the patient only steps out when he or she feels lost or confused with the goal of minimal intervention.

About 200 elderly people live in Hogback and six to seven live in one house. As a kind of residential community, the residence space varies according to the characteristics of the occupants. Each space has characteristics such as urban, domestic, and Christian.

Yvonne, who worked as a nurse at a nursing home in 1992, suggested a dementia village to hospital management because she believed there was a need for more free space for dementia patients and later opened it in 2009 with government support.

◇ 치매환자의 천국 호그백

치매 환자의 천국으로 설계된 네덜란드 '호그백(Hogeweyk)’, 치매 환자들이 가상의 마을을 이뤄 거주하는 공간으로 설계적 완성도가 높다.

호그백은 4,500여 평의 부지에 커피숍, 슈퍼마켓, 음식점, 공원, 미용실 등을 갖추고 있다. 입주자들은 마을 안에서 일상생활을 누리며 농장에서 채소를 가꾸거나 교회에서 예배 및 미술이나 요리 등 가벼운 취미 생활도 즐긴다.

그렇다고 치매 마을이 일반 마을과 완전히 똑같은 것은 아니다. 이들이 이용하는 마트에는 가격표가 붙어있지 않으며 미용실에서도 돈을 내지 않는다. 각 상점 등에 배치된 직원은 실제 인력이 아니라 요양 전문 간호사나 간병인, 노인병 전문 의사이기 때문이다. 이들은 마을 안에서 치매 환자와 함께 생활하며 환자들을 돕는다. 행동을 간섭하기보다는 최소한의 개입을 목표로 환자가 길을 잃거나 혼란을 느낄 때만 나서는 식이다.

호그백에는 약 200여 명의 노인이 거주하며 6~7명씩 한 집에서 생활한다. 일종의 주거 공동체로 입주자들의 특징에 따라 거주 공간이 달라진다. 각 공간은 도시적, 가정적, 기독교적 등의 특징을 지닌다.

1992년 요양원에서 간호사로 일하던 이본느는 치매 환자를 위한 좀 더 자유로운 공간이 필요하다고 보고 병원 경영진에게 치매 마을을 제안했고 이후 정부 지원 등을 받아 2009년 문을 열었다.

주나라의 노래자가 칠십 세 때 어린아이의 옷을 입고 어린애 장난을 하여 늙은 부모를 기쁘게 해드린 고사에서 유래.
