LG Chem’s secondary battery business began in 1991. Koo Bon-moo, vice chairman at the time, first encountered a secondary battery that is charged several times on a business trip in the UK and predicted that the secondary battery would become a new growth business in the future.

Mr. Koo has been studying secondary batteries for Lucky Metals, which was an affiliate at the time, and in 1996, he moved the battery research organization of Lucky Metals to LG Chem and continued his research.

The results were not easy: in 1997, LG Chem’s team succeeded in producing small-sized battery pilots, but they did not meet the quality of production. Despite years of investment, there was no visible result, and there was a lot of opinions about whether to close the business.

But Koo encouraged him to “look at it for a long time and focus more on investment, research, and development, and start again with the conviction that he can succeed.”

In 2005, the secondary battery business was nearly 200 billion won in deficit, but Chairman Koo said, “If you stick to it, you will have a successful day. “There is our future here.” As a result, LG Chem is now ranked number one in the world in the field of electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems.

◇ LG화학의 이차전지 사업은 1991년 시작됐다. 당시 부회장이었던 구본무회장은 영국 출장에서 여러 번 충전해 쓰는 이차전지를 처음 접하고 이차전지가 미래의 새로운 성장 사업이 될 가능성을 예견했다.

구 회장은 당시 계열사였던 럭키금속에 이차전지를 연구하도록 했고, 1996년 럭키금속의 전지 연구조직을 LG화학으로 이전해 연구를 계속 진행했다.

성과는 쉽게 나오지 않았다. 1997년 LG화학 연구진이 소형 전지 파일럿 생산에 처음으로 성공하긴 했지만 양산하기에는 품질이 따라주지 않았다. 수년간의 투자에도 불구하고 가시적인 성과가 나타나지 않자 ‘사업을 접어야 하는 것 아니냐’는 의견이 여기저기서 나왔다.

그러나 구 회장은 “포기하지 말고 길게 보고 투자와 연구·개발에 더욱 집중하라. 꼭 성공할 수 있다는 확신을 가지고 다시 시작하라”고 독려했다.

2005년에는 이차전지 사업이 2000억 원에 가까운 적자를 기록했다. 하지만 구 회장은 예전과 다름없이 “끈질기게 하다 보면 꼭 성공할 날이 올 것이다. 여기에 우리의 미래가 있다”고 다시 한 번 임직원들을 다독였다. 그 결과 현재 LG화학은 전기차 배터리 및 에너지 저장 시스템 분야에서 세계 1위로 평가 받는다.
