Gyeong Eui-kum" and "Sung sung-ja." 경의검과 성성자 외

◇ 敬義劍 惺惺子

The man-name breakfast usually carried a sword called "Gyeong Eui-kum" and a bell called "Sung sung-ja."

The knife is a symbol of a quasi-resolent resolution that will not tolerate him even a fraction of what may be "gyeong" and "ui."

일본어 공부를 열심히 하는 한 학생이 있었다. 일상생활에서도 늘 일본어로 중얼거렸다.

그러다 어느 날 전화벨이 울리는데 자기도 모르게 얼떨결에 말했다.

“모시모시.”

대답이 없더니 잠시 후 한마디!

◇ 경의검과 성성자

남명 조식은 평소에 ‘경의검(敬義劍)’이라는 칼과 ‘성성자(惺惺子)’라는 방울을 몸에 지니고 다녔다.

‘성성자’ 방울은 항상 허리에 차고 다녀 몸을 움직일 때마다 소리로 잡념을 없애고, 성인의 길에 도달하는 공경(恭敬)의 공부에 전념하리라는 생각에서였다.

평소 남명은 한 개의 장도(粧刀)를 늘 품에 지니고 다녔다.
‘경의검’ 오른편에는 ‘내명자경(內明者敬)’이라 새겼고, 왼편에 ‘외단자의(外斷者義)’라는 글을 새겼다. ‘안으로 나를 깨우치는 것은 경이고, 바깥으로는 결단있게 행동하는 것이 의’라는 뜻이다.

남명은 이 '경'으로 자신의 내부를 늘 밝히면서 근신하고 지냈다. 한편 '의(義)'는 '옳음'이니 정의로움을 향하는 정신으로 외부의 여러 정황들을 의로운 정신으로 판단하고자 했다. 의롭지 못한 것은 칼로 자르듯 베어내겠다는 뜻이다.

그 칼은 '경'과 '의'에 혹 소홀해질지도 모르는 자신을 추호도 용납하지 않겠다는 준열한 결의의 상징물이다.
